How I Save Time Making Dinner

Dinner time used to be exhausting in our house. We could never decide what we wanted to eat, and then we would fall into a rut of 5 or 6 different meals. I actually love to cook, I just don’t have a very consistent schedule and when I get home from work late I don’t want to have to think about what we are going to have for dinner.

Last June a coworker told me about how much she loves Home Chef. I was instantly intrigued. I loved the thought of just having meals show up every week and not having to think about what I was going to make each night. I also loved the fact that we would get to try new meals, and all the ingredients would show up at my door in the perfectly measured amounts. Isn’t one of the worst parts about trying new meals is having to buy large amounts of special ingredients without knowing if you are going to like the finished product?

So I signed up for Home Chef while she was telling me about it, and I haven’t looked back. I usually get three meals delivered each Tuesday. Each meal feeds two people. I choose what meals I would like the next week on Thursday or Friday morning the week before. I can also adjust down to two meals, or add more if I know I will be cooking every day the next week.

I have found that three meals a week is perfect for our family, that way I can still mix in some staples that I love, and we can go out to dinner if want to without wasting food.

Last night I made Pork Egg Roll in a Bowl. We have had this meal before, and I would order it again. It is quick (20ish minutes), easy, and delicious.

This is how the meals come. The ground pork was still in the fridge at this point, but all the produce has always been good and fresh in my opinion and I am picky about produce. Each meal also comes with a recipe card with step-by-step instructions and photos on the back.

There are some meal services that send you pre-cut produce. I find that a time saver, but it also wouldn’t stay fresh as long. Sometimes we don’t get to our meals for five or six days, so I need the produce to stay fresh. Plus, I really don’t mind chopping veggies.

This meal was especially easy. All I had to do was cut up the celery and green onion. Mix a sweet and sour sauce and a dijon mustard together. Then brown the ground pork.

Once the pork was browned I mixed in the slaw mix, added the pre-measured sauce and let it cook for a second to combine the flavors.

We topped it with the dressing and some green onions and we were ready to eat. These bowls are pretty deep, and it was definitely enough food to fill Aaron and me up.

If you want to try it out, I have a referral code that will get you $30 off your first box. I usually pay around $60 per week for 6 meals. It has drastically cut down on the amount of money and time I spend at the grocery store though because I only buy non-food items, some snacks, and some beverages.
