When was the last time you washed your makeup brushes? And not just wiped them off on a towel between colors, but actually deep cleaned them?
I can’t stress enough how important it is to wash your makeup brushes. Ideally, you should deep clean your brushes every week. We all know that sometimes life gets in the way of that happening. There have been plenty of weekends that I had it on my to-do list and then realized I either didn’t have time to actually wash them, or I didn’t have time to wait for them to dry. If you don’t get it done once a week, a least make sure you are doing it once a month.
Over time your makeup brushes can accumulate bacteria. The kind that not only will cause your skin to breakout they can also actually make you sick. Over time brushes can also collect dead skin cells and oil which clog your pores.
A quick 3 questions to ask yourself if you can’t remember the last time you deep cleaned your brushes are
- Is my makeup applying streaky?
- Is my skin breaking out?
- Have I been sick recently and used them?
If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then schedule in 15 minutes and wash those babies.
I bought this scrubber mat from TJ Maxx (similar one here) and I am obsessed with it. You don’t have to buy one of these to properly clean your makeup brushes, but it sure does speed up the process. The brush cleaner I use came from Ulta, and it has lasted me a long time. I also have a waterless brush cleaner that I use when I am switching colors or products.
Every week or two, usually on a Sunday, I deep clean all my brushes and I can tell a difference every single time. My makeup applies so much smoother, my eyeshadows seem more pigmented because the brushes aren’t muddy from other colors, and I have fewer breakouts.
Happy brush cleaning.
