The Easiest Top Knot

Every time I wear my hair in a top knot I get complements on it. The funny thing is, it is the easiest and quickest way to style my hair in the morning. It is my version of a ponytail. My hair is in a top knot from the moment I get out of work until I go to bed. It keeps my hair out of my face and off my neck, but also looks good enough that I can run errands or have someone over and not feel like I need to fix my hair.

It is no secret I have a lot of hair. It is thick, coarse, and long. There is no doubt that those three things help me get a lot of volume in my top knots. That isn’t required for this quick and easy style though, as long as your hair is long enough to put on the top of your head, you can master this look with a little practice. The best part about this look is that it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Here are the things you will need:

  1. A brush to brush out your hair before you put it up.
  2. An Invisibobble or similar hair tie.

The trick is really in the hair tie. I use these ones from Amazon. I bought three of them a year or so ago and use them every single day. They do get stretched out as you wear them, but if you run them under hot water or hit them with a blow dryer they shrink back down.

I used to do this look with a regular hair tie, and it still works it just looks less loose and lived in. I don’t like my hair to be tight against my head in a bun or ponytail. I think a little volume on top makes these look 100x better.

I have a couple tips to make sure this turns out messy, but also polished. The first tip is how you pull the hair back on top. I never pull my hair straight back from the top of my head. I pull back from my ears to leave my part in tact. As I raise the bun higher on my head my part starts to disappear, but I don’t loose that volume. If you have thin hair and have a hard time getting volume on the top of your head try back combing at your crown.

The second tip is to never pull your hair all the way through the hair tie. I pull my hair through about 75%, then switch hands and push it through the other way.

Lastly, don’t try to make it perfect. The reason the invisibobble hair ties are the way to go is that you can pull them out to push hair back in the bun and they shrink back down. They also don’t feel tight on your head or put a lot of bumps in your hair. If you have a couple of bumps on the top, just pull hair up in other spots to make it even. If some front pieces are falling out, pull them out. There is no “right” way to wear this look, and it is supposed to look lived in.

If you want to add a cute bow to dress it up, even more, I love these ones. I wrap these around once the bun is done to add a girly touch.
