If you missed part one of the story behind our move to San Francisco, you can read it here. Part two will pick up where part one left off, the return home from our interview.
We returned home to Flint on Sunday, December 3rd. We told coworkers and friends we went to San Francisco to visit a friend, and we carried on with our lives like normal. It was holiday time, so we were so busy with work, holiday parties, and friends and family.
On December 17, 2018, Steve called us to tell us he was going to draft up an official offer. We were both being offered jobs. Again, I panicked.
The negotiation process took a couple of weeks. We finally reached an agreement and decided to take the leap of a lifetime. In all honesty, if it hadn’t been holiday time I may have second-guessed the whole thing. We were so busy that everything Bonneville related kind of seemed like just another line on my to-do list.
- Fill out new hire paperwork
- Book flights
- Resign from our jobs
Resigning from my job at Townsquare Media was one of the hardest things I have done. I loved my coworkers and my time there. I was filling in for the morning show the week between Christmas and New Years, so I had to be at work at 6 am on December 26th, the day I needed to resign.
I didn’t sleep at all the night before. I had so many emotions. Excitement for the future, sadness, stress, everything. When I finished the morning show air shift at 10 am I went into my boss’s office and told her I had been offered an opportunity. She listened to what had been offered to me and said “I’m so jealous. If I could pack everything up and move to a new city I would in a heartbeat.” I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction. I cried, we hugged, I then told her that Aaron needed to talk to her too and walked out.
Our radio stations hosted an NYE party each year, so my last two weeks were crazy busy. I was planning, reconciling, recapping, and finalizing the event and the event year. I’m thankful again that I was so busy so I couldn’t stress about the logistics of moving across the country.
My last day at Townsquare Media Flint was Wednesday, January 9th. Our flight to San Francisco was booked for Saturday, January 12th. Our last three days in Michigan were filled with going away parties, Aaron’s Birthday (January 11th), packing, vet appointments, more packing, tears, logistics, and excitement.
When we left for the airport we had four suitcases that we filled to the max, both cats, and a carry-on for each of us. We would live for the next six weeks with only what we took with us that day. More on that in part three…
