My Hair Care Routine and Favorite Products

Hands down, the thing I get the most comments on is my hair. It is long and thick, and I get comments on it all the time. I guess we always wish for what we don’t have, because when I was younger I wished my hair weren’t as course, and had a natural curl.

As I’ve gotten older, I have learned to love the hair I was blessed with. The fact that I have found products and tools that work for my hair has helped me embrace its natural texture so much more.

I change my hair care routine up from time to time, and while I love to try new products, I have found a few products that I love and can recommend to anyone looking for something new to try.

Shampoos and Conditioners

The first step in my hair care routine is obviously shampoo and conditioner. I am so picky when it comes to these two products. It has to smell good, but not too strong. It has to leave my hair feeling clean, but conditioned.

Shampoo | Conditioner

I have used Biolage Hydra Source Shampoo and Conditioner for over a year. The scent is amazing, though slightly strong. My hair feels clean and hydrated, and it is included in all the Ulta hair sales, so it is easy to stock up at a good price.

Purple Shampoo

I searched for a long time to find a purple shampoo that didn’t dry my hair out instantly. I fell in love with this one a while ago. It smells great, brightens up my blonde instantly, and doesn’t dry my hair out. I use it once a week, and let it sit on my hair for 3-5 minutes before I shampoo it with regular shampoo.

Shampoo | Conditioner

SeneGence just released a new haircare line, and I really like it. We have a line that adds volume and shine, but I needed something more hydrating for my hair. The HairPlenish line smells great, leaves my hair silky-smooth, and shiny. It is a very concentrated formula, so I only use a nickel-size amount of each for all my hair. I wash my hair twice and condition it once.

Deep Conditioners, Cleansers, and Treatments

These are products I don’t use daily, or in some cases even weekly, but they play a role in my overall hair care routine.

Olaplex

Olaplex has been a game changer for my hair. Especially since I haven’t been to the salon since December 31st, and am in desperate need of a trim. I use this every couple of weeks to help repair my hair. I put it on as soon as I get in the shower, it should sit on your hair for about 10 minutes. I then shave and wash my face and body, then rinse it out and shampoo and condition like normal.

Anti-residue Shampoo

This shampoo is great for really cleaning the residue off your scalp. If I use a lot of product like dry shampoo or hairspray on week, or if I go a few extra days between washes, I will use this to really clean my hair and scalp.

Scalp and Hair Serum

This is a new product that I am trying out, but loving so far. I only use a couple of times a week. This is a serum for your scalp, not the strands of your hair. I do a few small pumps and rub them right into my scalp when my hair is dry. It doesn’t make my hair look or feel greasy, but I do usually do it at night.

Prep Rally

Did you know that I went over a year without every blow drying my hair? I can’t think of many things I hate more than using a blow dryer. It takes forever, and I hate the feeling of damp hair whipping around my face. Now that we have been running in the mornings, I need to blow dry my hair before work. A heat protectant is so important with any heat on your hair, and I really like this one. I don’t know that it really speeds up my drying time, but I have a lot of hair so I didn’t expect it to.

I usually try to let my hair air dry as much as I can, but some days that isn’t possible. I spray the Pep Rally all over my hair when I let it out of the towel.

Then I blow dry. I use a wet brush as I go to help with tangles.

This is my hair after using just the blow dryer. I could get a more smoothed out look if I used a round brush, but I don’t have time for that. My ends are very dry right now, so I have a little extra frizziness at the ends.

To combat the frizz, I run a flat iron over the ends if I’m not curling my hair. You can see how bad my roots really are in this photo. It’s hard to tell sometimes, but they are there in full force.

Once it’s all smoothed out I’m good to go for a few days. This week I washed my hair on Monday and Friday morning. I usually also wash it Wednesday, but we didn’t run on Wednesday so I didn’t need to. I don’t use a lot of products in my hair after I style it. I might use some dry shampoo every once in a while, but I usually just let it do its thing.
