I talk a lot about our two Savannah Cats, Bishop and Jade, but I have never formally introduced them here. Yesterday was their sixth birthday, so what better time than now to tell you all about the cats that drive us crazy and we love so much.
Aaron told me he wanted a Savannah Cat shortly after his Main Coon, Jezebelle passed in 2014. After doing some research, I learned that Savannah’s can be massive, cheetah like cats. I was concerned that meant they wouldn’t be cuddly, but he assured me they would be.
He found a breeder in Tennessee that had a couple of kittens available and won me over with this photo of baby Bishop. Look at that face! When we face timed the breeder he told us Bishop had a sister (their names were Luke and Leia at the time) that he was very attached to, and he would love to see them stay together. We had read that Savannah’s have so much energy they are better in pairs, so we told him we would take both.
On August 17, 2014 we drove down from Michigan to Indiana to meet our new kittens.
Bishop cuddled up to me immediately and slept on my lap for most of the five hour drive.
Baby Jade climbed all over everything and got into all the trouble.
They really were (and still are) best friends. They nap together all the time, get into trouble together, and play together daily. When they were kittens Jade was quite a bit bigger than Bishop, and used to beat up on him while they played. He must remember that, because he is much bigger than her now and does the same.
Bishop was cuddly right from the start. I could hold him, flip him over, put a collar on him, he was my baby.
Jade tolerated me, and laid on my lap when Aaron wasn’t home.
Jade did (and still does) love carbs like I do though. This was two months after we got them. I haven’t been able to leave carbs, left overs, or any food out since this day.
This was their first birthday, May 25, 2015. I have more photos of one of them with their tongue out than I am proud to admit.
We have dressed them up, attempted to walk them on leashes outside, and anything else we could think of.
Bishop has a weird obsession with the plastic wrapping on cases of water. He will sit on it and lick the plastic for as long as we let him.
Jade likes to jump on the Kuerig and sit there. I assume she does it because it is warm.
It took a few years, but Jade warmed up to me. She lays on my lap most nights now. Bishop loves to be under the blanket cuddled up with me like a person.
And they continue to be best friends.
They may keep us up at night, break into the cupboards, knock over everything on every table, and demand pieces of bacon, but they also make me laugh daily and are every bit as cuddly as I hoped they would be.
