Monthly Recap: October 2020

For some reason, out of nowhere, our October was pretty busy. Nowhere near 2019 busy, but we did a lot of things considering the circumstances.

October is peak fire season in CA, and this year the fires we bad. Aaron and I had planned to do an afternoon hike that ended at a great spot to catch the sunset in the North Bay. I packed up some snacks and we hit the road around 2pm. As we were approaching the last road to get to our hike destination there was a sign that the road was closed due to fire danger. We did a quick google search to look for an alternative hike and found that they were all closed.

We made the best of it though and drove around until we found a place to eat our snacks and watch the sunset.

We can ask to have our windows washed once each year for free. I tried to have them washed in March, but they stopped non-emergency maintenance. So after a long seven months looking through dirty windows, we finally had them cleaned. This guy took out the safety latch and just walked out the window like it was nothing. We live on the 20th floor and the ledge on the other side in less than 6 inches. I was amazed.

Aaron is on a committee that helps to raise money for the American Cancer Society. They can’t have events this year, so they have had to get creative with fundraising opportunities. This month we did a virtual cocktail class hosted by Pour Souls Chicago. We had so much fun learning how to make classic drinks and meeting new people in the class.

Before this Friday night I don’t remember the last time I left our apartment after the sunset for any reason. A few Fridays ago we were invited to a web series premier on a rooftop in Oakland. The web series was funny, and it was so nice to have a quick night out.

For some reason I was dead set on visiting a pumpkin patch his fall. I don’t know why, but I kept telling Aaron I wanted to find one. On a beautiful sunny Sunday we met up with some friends and drove down to a pumpkin patch. They aren’t the same here. It was literally just pumpkins. I was expecting animals, donuts, cider, other fall activities. We had fun anyway. We picked a couple pumpkins and had lunch at a BBQ place before heading home.

Speaking of pumpkins…all I bought them for was the seeds. We love homemade pumpkin seeds and we didn’t have any last year. My recipe is here.

Morning football is a thing I will never get used to. I watched the U of M vs MSU game at 9am on a Saturday.

We ended October with a quiet Halloween night at home. We never get trick or treaters, but the city seemed especially quiet this year. We did have one of the brightest moons I have ever seen that night though.

Also this building shuts off it’s exterior lights every night at 9:04pm and it’s super creepy every single time.

I’m looking forward to November! I have a friend visiting, we have Thanksgiving, and it is the full holiday season!
